An evening at The Southsea Deli is not quite what many people might expect once the daytime service finishes and the doors reopen for one of the supper club events hosted under the South Coast Cookery name.
We recently brought together six strangers and invited them along to experience one of the venue’s Greek-themed evenings, designed around shared tables and learning more about the food being prepared throughout the night with its open kitchen layout.
By day, many people know the venue as a popular Southsea deli, but in the evenings, it takes on a completely different identity. The supper clubs and workshops focus on bringing people together through food, with guests encouraged to take part in the workshops, learn techniques, and enjoy a more interactive dining experience than a traditional restaurant setting. We’ve had the privilege of taking part in many of these and we can confirm, they are great fun!
The Greek supper club evening was led by Daniel, owner of The Southsea Deli, whose background includes previously working alongside Jamie Oliver. During the evening, Daniel spoke about growing up in Greece and returning regularly, experiences which clearly influence both his style of cooking and the dishes prepared throughout the evening.
Guests were guided through the dishes on the menu while enjoying a relaxed and sociable atmosphere built around shared tables with the main topic of conversation built around food. The format offers something slightly different from the usual Portsmouth evening out.
For those interested in cookery workshops, supper clubs, or food-focused events with a more personal and interactive approach, South Coast Cookery is quickly becoming one to watch within Southsea’s growing independent food scene. With more venues beginning to experiment with creative food events and community dining experiences, it is encouraging to see concepts like this continuing to develop locally at venues such as Southsea Coffee, The Clubhouse and The Canteen.
